ATTACK OF THE BLACK SCORPIONS — A Passion Delayed but Never Surrendered

ATTACK OF THE BLACK SCORPIONS – Yes, it’s been a long journey already, and I’m pumped to continue on…

Welcome, everyone!

David V. Gregory*, here.

I’m an Indie Filmmaker and seasoned Visual/Optical effects craftsman – one of the few who successfully transitioned from analog to digital – though I honestly love both approaches.

ATTACK OF THE BLACK SCORPIONS has a very long history – first starting as a screenplay I wrote in 1991. It’s a no-holds-barred SciFi-Horror Thriller, similar to TERRIFIER in graphic intensity.

In late 2019, with the movie’s development & preparation executed and updated, I began soliciting potential investors for funding both the production and its distribution via what’s called a Regulation D / Rule 506c “Test-the-Waters” Offering. By the end of February 2020, we reached, in pledges, 95% of the minimum amount we needed. Then Covid hit, and I had no choice but to shut everything down.

During the lockdown and with little else I could do, I used the time to novelize the screenplay and paint digital portraits of the characters. Subsequently, the novel was published in 2022.

Not only was the film industry’s normal release procedure turned upside down during the pandemic, but the service-based distribution company we’d been dealing with virtually died and my business plan’s projections had become obsolete.

So, coming out of the lockdown and seeing [1] how the industry had “re-tooled” distribution (with far fewer commercial distributors than ever before), [2] how the industry had “re-funneled” earned income (transparency gone & the streamers offering shrinking licensing fees), and [3] how the industry had unnecessarily “panicked” over A.I., I realized that it was time to entirely re-think my approach.

The plan now is to raise as much money as reasonably possible to make the movie for as little as possible – “shooting” my actors in a warehouse via performance capture and rendering everything in photo-real CG.

Having kept up-to-date with the latest tech, I’ve worked-out how this picture can indeed be made this way at a very low cost. And no, before you ask, we will not be using Generative A.I. – but Non-Generative A.I. tools will definitely be used to assist in the CG creation from my own designs.

This challenge is something akin to shooting BEN HUR on the budget of THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, but it will certainly be groundbreaking when finished.

So now, our first hurdle is raising as much money as we reasonably can – under the current political & economic climate – with an awesome Crowdfunding campaign, slated to launch early in 2026.

In my upcoming posts, I’ll be describing the movie’s story and its cast of characters. And I will also be revealing why I’m making this picture and my passion for doing so.

I promise to post here as frequently as I can, so please check back soon.

* For decades, I used to just go by friendlier and less-formal “Dave Gregory”. But since there are now several David Gregorys in the business, I began using middle initial in 2022. Heck, I’ve an outstretched claim to the name anyway, LOL! Not only did I begin working in Hollywood in 1974, but imdb actually lists me as “Dave Gregory (I)”. 😁
